On Friday, July 20, 2018, the Private Market Sector (PRIMS) of AIIC will be holding its first (and hopefully not last) Interpreters’ BarCamp. The session will be open to everyone: AIIC and non-AIIC interpreters, students, teachers, PCOs, LSPs and anyone working in the interpreting sector. It will be a wonderful opportunity for us to gather innovative and inspiring ideas for our profession in an open, creative and unconventional way.
Interpreters’ BarCamp Draft Agenda
Registration and Light Lunch
Part One – Learning and sharing
Write a topic of your choice on a Post-it. Then place a tick on the Post-it you find more interesting. The nine participants whose Post-it gets the most votes will each have 30 minutes to share their knowledge in three parallel sessions.
Part Two – Brainstorming session
Indicate a topic you would like to discuss with your peers. The three most voted topics will be discussed during three parallel sessions and with an out-of-the-box approach.
A BarCamp is not your typical conference, and participants will not be sitting all day listening to other people. Instead, they will engage with fellow colleagues and share their ideas, experiences and projects. Some events will be scheduled in advance, but much of our work will be proposed and decided upon on the very day, according to a few, simple rules.
Come to the BarCamp with a short (20-30 min), prepared presentation. If the BarCampers vote for your topic, you will be asked to give your presentation. If not, you’ll get a chance next time.
BarCampers are invited to share any interesting information and their experiences on social media before, during and after the BarCamp: Twitter, blogs, Instagram, etc. to involve as many people as possible.
More details about the exact location will be provided soon.
The Interpreters’ BarCamp will be followed by our two-day PRIMS meeting, open to AIIC members, candidates and pre-candidates only.
The Brazilian team is also organizing a one-week Portuguese refresher course.
Details will be provided once everything has been finalized. So stay tuned!
We look forward to having you on board for this new experience. If you wish to register or want to join our “Friends of PRIMS” mailing list, please send an email to:
Additional info on the BarCamp format
What follows is a definition and personal account of the BarCamp experience that we came across on the Internet:
BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees. The event doesn’t cost any money, but there is a price: all attendees must give a demo, a session, or help with one. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. When you come, be prepared to share with BarCampers. When you leave, be prepared to share it with the world (https://www.quora.com/What-is-a-BarCamp).
This isn’t another conference where you’re going to hear the same talks from the same speakers. This is a conference for and by your peers, where people are sharing what they’re working on right now, having roundtables about what comes next, and having a lot of fun (https://www.quora.com/What-is-a-BarCamp).
